Alice Leona Unland Vanderpool died on May 15, 2016, at the age of 97, in Alamo, Texas surrounded by her loved ones on her family's farm where she was born, Armistice Day, November 11, 1918. She was vibrant, active and remained independent throughout her 97 years of life. She was born on the farm, that her parents Julius and Jessie Smith settled on in Alamo, being the first of eight children to be born there. She loved sitting on her porch listening to the birds and tending to her plants and chickens. Alice took great pride in taking care of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren and was known for her fried chicken and tradition of making homemade donuts whenever it rained. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all that knew her. Her husband, A. J. Vanderpool; five brothers, John, Joseph, Fred, George & Robert Unland as well as her sister Ellen Vanderpool precede her in death. She is survived by her sister Julia Euler; her three sons, Wesley, Wayne and Verne Vanderpool; and three daughters, Jackie Brooks, Betty Strohmeyer and Sharon Miller. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 28th and burial of ashes will follow at a later date at Roselawn Cemetery in McAllen.
