Joanne Bartunek, age 69, of Aberdeen, SD formerly of Yankton, SD, died Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at Sanford Health, Sioux Falls, SD, after she experienced complications with surgery.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 24, 2007 at Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with the Rev. Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories following the funeral.

Pallbearers will be Matt Grunchow, Jeff Hays, Nicholas Stiles, Keith Crawford, Danny Bentley, and Brent Hays.

Joanne was born March 6, 1937 at Sioux City, IA to Albert and Nellie (Horn) Motley. Joanne will be remembered as the feisty, fiery matriarch of her family, but also a loving protector and guide to her loved ones. Those touched by Joanne's life will remember her ardent devotion to family and to life. Joanne's strength of spirit and her quiet, steadfast love for God, helped her and her family weather many trials and were the source of solid values which she felt her duty to instill in her children. For Joanne, family and home were the well from which she believed family members were to find strength and courage all their days. There, too, could be found Joanne's counsel, delivered with a combination of firm tone and wit. She was generous and thankful and, in her final days, nearly unshakable in the face of an incurable illness.

Joanne enjoyed making music with her husband, Art. Her children and grandchildren will carry with them the tunes hummed and sung by Joanne; songs and hymns that Joanne would not only draw inspiration from, but weave gently the songs' lessons into her family life. Joanne was as unique a character as any and a spirited, tenacious and unforgettable presence. She will be missed greatly.

Joanne is survived by her six children; 2 sons; Kenny (Jewel) Stiles and Roy (Nikki) Stiles both of Yankton, SD; four daughters; Kayleen (Mike) Hite of Sioux Falls, SD, Linda (Rick) Bentley of Utica, SD, Vickie (Kelly) Sandmeier of Aberdeen, SD, and Kim (Jim) Foxhoven of Crofton, NE; three sisters and one brother; 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Art, and two brothers.
