August 26, 1811 two soldiers stationed in Pittsburgh quarreled and challenged each other to a duel. They set a meeting place at Winchester, Virginia. One traveled as far as Florence where he spent the night. The next morning he awoke very early and went out to practice with his pistols. Random shot hit old Captain Bavington's tombstone in the Florence Cemetery. One can see to this day the two bullet holes in the slab that marks his grave.
