In 1917 with the United States involved in World War One, Eli joined the National Guard on March 03, 1917. He was assigned to Company B 4th Infantry ONG (Company B 166 Infantry) and served in the battles in France at the Marne, Meuse-Argonne; Defensive sector. He was wounded in action slightly on July 28, 1918. He was part of the American Expeditionary Force under General Black Jack Pershing. He was honorable discharged April 17, 1919.
After returning from war he used the new G.I. Bill and moved to Valparaiso, Indiana, and learned a trade. There, he met Ruth Leffler and married her.
They had five children: Carroll V. Wilgus in 1923, David D. Wilgus in 1925, Mary Arlene Wilgus in 1928, Billie Lee Wilgus in 1929 (died tragically at age 3) when he was hit by a motorist. Wayne Wilgus in 1931.
