Carroll Vaughn Wilgus loved for his family to gather at his

home every Sunday for lunch. He was the kind of man who always made you feel

welcome with a hug or a pat on the back.

Mr. Wilgus, 71, who died July 25, was a longtime Valparaiso resident.

"He was a wonderful man who made me and my sister-in-law (Dorothy) feel very

welcome into the family," Genia Wilgus said of her father-in-law. "He was like

a second dad to me and he was a very good grandfather. He was more involved

with his family than with anything else."

Donetta Wilgus said her husband also always had a big goodbye kiss each time

his family left, and that no one was a stranger to him.

"He also loved the outdoors and especially working in his yard," she said.

"It's beautiful. In the evening, he enjoyed playing games Trionimoes, Scrabble

and dice games with our daughter and me."

Mr. Wilgus' family also said that he was a baseball fan who rooted for the

Cubs on television and watched football and basketball games.

Mr. Wilgus worked at the U.S. Steel Sheet & Tin Mill in Gary for 31 years as

a car-checker. He retired in 1986.

He is survived by his wife, Donetta Wilgus of Valparaiso; two sons, Vaughn

Keith (Dorothy) of Crown Point and Randall Lee (Genia) of Merrillville; two

daughters, Margo Jean (Mark) Sanders and Dawn Deann Wilgus of Valparaiso; seven

grandchildren; two foster grandchildren, Samantha and Miranda; one brother,

Wayne (Garnet) Wilgus of Valparaiso; one sister, Arlene Hughes of Florida; and

one sister-in-law, Audrey Dommer Wilgus of Kouts, Ind.

Funeral services were July 28 at Bartholomew Funeral Home, Valparaiso, with

the Rev. Douglas Hadley officiating. Interment was at Graceland Cemetery.
