A public gathering will be held following private family services for 100-year-old Dora Velna Blanchard Thomas of Sheridan. Private interment will be in Green Crest Memorial Park.
Mrs. Thomas died May 2, 2004, in Life Care Center, McMinnville, after a brief illness.
The gathering will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the home of a daughter, Nadine Stuck, at 844 S. Bridge St., Sheridan.
Mrs. Thomas, daughter of David Elmer and Laura May Buell Blanchard, was born May 10, 1903, in a house a mile south of Sheridan. She lived in many houses her father built, as well as the Sheridan Hotel when her parents owned it. It was destroyed in the Sheridan Fire of 1913.
In 1914, her father took his young family on an 11-day trip with horses and wagons, loose stock and dreams of homesteading in Central Oregon. Because she was the oldest, Dora became her father's top hand. One of her responsibilities was to ride the fence lines of two homesteads every Saturday morning. As an 11-year-old, she fixed fences and birthed calves.
She and Rueben Guile Thomas married in 1919 in Central Oregon. Mrs. Thomas moved back to Sheridan in 1935. Her husband preceded her in death in 1971.
Mrs. Thomas lived in her home, where she sewed, cooked and took care of her own finances until mid-April. For many years, she was in business as a seamstress.
Her family said, "She was our inspiration, delighting her grandkids, great-grandkids and great-great-grandkids with dolls, quilts and her witty outlook on life.
Survivors include two daughters, Nadine Stuck of Sheridan and Evelyn Klanecky of Salem; two sons, Don Thomas of Salem and E.L. "Tom" Thomas of Reno; a sister, Neta Colson of Port Orford; 19 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by three sons, Denton, Clair and Delmer; three grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in care of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, 135 N.E. Evans St., McMinnville, OR 97128.
