The son of Thomas Gay and Frances Patience McDaniel Gay, Allen Gay began his Revolutionary War service when only sixteen years of age, volunteering to act as a substitute for his father, who had been summoned to appear at the high hills of Santee for twelve months' service in the North Carolina Militia. He was attached to a battalion belonging to General Nathaniel Greene's army. At the battle of Eutaw Springs, the company to which he was attached was a part of the advance, and he displayed a courage which would have done honor to veterans. Upon this occasion he actually took five of the enemy as prisoners.

After the war he moved to Georgia: first to Washington County, next to Hancock, County and finally to Coweta County. He married three times: first to Celia Rae Elbert in 1785; second to Abigail Castleberry on September 5, 1787 and then on October 1, 1824 to Ann Pickron Barton. Allen Gay died in Coweta County at the age of eighty-two. He was a worthy member of the Baptist Church and records indicate that the Macedonia Baptist Church was founded in his home in 1828.
