Actor. He is remembered for playing the title role in the TV Western series "The Virginian" (1962 to 1971). Born in New York City, his father was a professor at the city's University. James spent time living in both New York and on a farm in Oregon. His interest in acting began during his early youth, and he joined a touring show at the age of twelve. He studied acting at New York University and accumulated a wide range of credits in theatre among them Shakespearean roles. Following this experience, he relocated to Hollywood and found minor parts in the films "The Blackboard Jungle" (1955) and "Love Me or Leave Me" (1955) before finding a more substantial role in the Frank Sinatra picture "The Tender Trap" (1955). He found his niche on the small screen and seemed at home in Westerns, including "Gunsmoke," "Rawhide," and "Wagon Train," before landing his signature role in "The Virginian." Drury remained active in the industry into the 2000s. He was the fourth member of his family to be called James Drury
