Actress. She will be best remembered for her role as 'Aunt Deedy' in the dramatic film, "Mokey" in 1942. She also sang the song, "In The Sweet By and By" in the movie. The film, which was directed by Wells Roots, and also starred Dan Dailey, Donna Reed, and a young Robert Blake tells the story of 'Mokey' (played by Robert Blake) an eight-year-old boy whose father gives him too little attention and whose stepmother misunderstands him. His misdeeds are due to neglect and misunderstanding on the part of his elders. Born Minnie Matilda Hatfield in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she began her acting career by appearing in numerous stage plays and vaudeville acts. She was also a member of the famous Lafayette Players all-Black repertory theatre group that performed on Broadway in New York City. She also appeared on stage in Los Angeles, California, and in London, England. One of her more prominent stage roles was in the lead role in "Madame X." This led to her appearing in some films which were directed or produced by Oscar Micheaux. She made her film debut playing 'Annie' in the romantic drama, "The Easiest Way" (1917), which was directed by the prominent French director Albert Capellini. Besides, "The Easiest Way" (1917), and "Mokey" (1942), her other film credits include, "Deceit" (1923), "The Millionaire" (1927), "Spirit Of Youth" (1938), "Am I Guilty?" (1940), "Mr. Washington Goes To Town" (1941), and "The Vanishing Virginian" (1942). Her last role was as 'Aunt Deedy' in "Mokey" (1942). She passed away in San Diego, California, at the age of 78. Almost 100 people came to pay their respects at her funeral, sadly though, she is almost forgotten today.
