AYARS, CLINTON BOWEN, canner and farmer. Born, Greenwich, December 1, 1874, son of Benjamin S. and Martha (Rammel) Ayars.

In 1664 there came to these shores, from England, Robert Ayars, who settled in Rhode Island. Twenty years later he came to Back Neck, now Lanings Wharf, just across the river from Greenwich, where he remained until 1695. In that year he purchased from Dr. James Wass, a London physician, 2200 acres covering the present site of Shiloh, and established a town there. He was a Baptist and he sold his land to those of his own faith, only. Clinton B. Ayars is of the eighth generation of his progeny, which has always lived in South Jersey, following farming, blacksmithing, machinery and canning. He was educated in the Bridgeton public schools and South Jersey Institute.

In 1872, Benjamin S. Ayars started a canning business in Greenwich, removing, in 1880, to Bridgeton. This was the nucleus of the present cannery operated by his son, the subject of this sketch, who bought the father's business in 1905. Clinton B. Ayars was the pioneer, in this section, in the buying and operating of farms in connection with the canning business.

On April 26, 1900, Mr. Ayars married Rose Robbins Platt, and of the union have been born three children namely: Everett Platt, February 5, 1902; Kenneth Maxwell, August 12, 1904, and Thomas, April 23, 1910.

Mr. Ayars is a member of Evening Star Lodge, No. 97, Free and Accepted Masons; Brearley Chapter, No. 6, Royal Arch Masons; and Welcome Council, No. 45, Junior Order United American Mechanics. He is a Republican and a Baptist.
