Sir Henry Bagenal was born in 1556. He is the son of Sir Nicholas Bagenal and Eleanora Griffith.

He married Eleanora Savage, daughter of Sir John Savage, in 1579.

He died on 14 August 1598, killed in action.

Sir Henry Bagenal was also known as Sir Henry Bagenall.

He was educated at Jesus College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.

He was invested as a Knight in 1578.

He was a powerful soldier and politician, a friend and chief political agent in Ireland of Lord Burghley.

He was a bitter enemy of his brother-in law, Ædh (Hugh) O'Neill, the last King of Ulster and 2nd Earl of Tyrone.

He succeeded to the office of Marshal of the Army in Ireland on 13 May 1583, previously held by his father.

He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Anglesey from 1586 to 1587.

He lived at Newry, County Down, Ireland. He lived at Plâs Newydd, Bangor, Gwynedd, Wales, jure uxoris.

He fought in the Battle of the Blackwater on 14 August 1598, when his army was cut to pieces by Ædh (Hugh) O'Neill, his brother-in-law.
