As a young man he worked at the Indian Hills golf Club and lived the "high life" for a while. However, he met a beautiful young woman at the First Baptist Church and decided to change his ways. He married that beautiful young woman, Alice Lorene Freeman on August 4, 1944 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They were blessed with two sons, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Owen was member of the Knights of Pythias and was active in Boy Scouts in both Missouri and Oklahoma. He loved to sing "God Bless America". He loved going to Lorene's family farm and participating in the farm work there. He fondly recalled trips he and Lorene made to Europe, Russia, Israel and Hawaii. At age 100 Owen was still attending the Baptist Church and serving as a greeter.
Owen said he owes his longevity to following the lord and living right. He advised younger people to refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol and to eat healthy, be thankful and pray every day.
