NEWTON S. ADKINS, FLORIST, DIES; RESIDENT OF CITY FOR 35 YEARS
Newton S. Adkins, 70, of 116 Fayette Street, co-operator with his wife of the Adkins Floral Company and a widely known Charleston resident for 35 years, died unexpectedly at his home Saturday.
Mr. Adkins was born at Harrisonburg, Virginia, September 26, 1880, a son of Charles E. and Mary F. Goode Adkins. He came to Charleston in 1915 and associated himself with his brother in the O. I. Adkins Plumbing Company.
In 1940 he retired from the plumbing company and became active in the floral company which his wife, Mrs. Sadie Adkins, had established some years before.
He was a member of the United Brethren church at Tennessee and Roane streets, and of the Glendale lodge, Knights of Pythias.
In addition to Mrs. Adkins, he is survived by a son, Charles, at home, a sister, Mrs. J. D. Stalnaker of Alliquippa, Pennsylvania; three brothers, O. J. Adkins of Charleston, W. M of Warrenton, Virginia, and C. E. Adkins of Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Long-Johnson-Fisher Mortuary is in charge of arrangements and the body is at the residence.
Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in United Brethren church with the Rev. Ray Cole and Rev. Pat Withrow officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
