David Lindsay was the youngest of eight children born to Judge Robert Lindsay (c.1735-1801) and Ann "Nancy" McGee (1753/4-1832), who were married on 23 June 1772. They lived at The Homestead, on Deep River, where Guilford County had been founded in 1771, and where the county court met until 1774.

David had two half siblings from his father's previous marriage, Eliabeth, who died young, and John A. Lindsay (1767-1828, m. Elizabeth Wilson). He had seven full brothers and sisters: Senator Samuel Lindsay (c.1773-1814, m. Henrietta Causey), Colonel Robert Lindsay (1776-1818, m. Letitia Harper), William Lindsay (1777-1841, m. Elisabeth Briggs, 4th great grandparents of the writer), Jane Lindsay (1779-1827, m. Jesse Hargrave), Elizabeth Lindsay (1784-1825, m. Rev. Samuel C. Caldwell), Andrew Lindsay (1786-1844, m. Elizabeth Dick) and Susannah Lindsay (1789-1857, m. Dr. Joseph Wood). David was the last child.

David Lindsay married Sarah Dillon in 1816, and they had two sons, Alpheus Lindsay (born 1818) and William Dillon Lindsay (1820-1870). William was a doctor, and served as a surgeon in the 48th NC Regiment, Confederate States Army.
