Wallace D. "Scoop" Curtis of Belgrade died Friday at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. He was 78.

He was born and raised in the Gallatin Valley. He married Ruth Keil on March 27, 1937, in Townsend, and they had one son, William Wallace Curtis. Ruth died in 1944.

He served in Japan during World War II, and married Maria Schneiter on October 7, 1945. They had a daughter, Alice. The couple farmed his father's place until 1954 when they took a homestead at Rupert, Idaho. They had a son, Tom, in 1961.

In June 1971 the homestead was sold and the couple moved back to the Gallatin Valley.

He was a member of Belgrade Lodge No. 68 AF & AM, Livingston Scottish Rite Bodies, and was a life member of VFW No. 6810. He was a member of the Belgrade Community Church.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Curtis of Belgrade; two sons, William Wallace Curtis of Lincoln, Neb., and Tom Curtis of Belgrade; one daughter, Alice Torix of Belgrade; one brother, Wilbur Curtis of Belgrade; two sisters, Alice Cook of Bozeman, and Helen Miller of Rupert; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Belgrade Community Church. Interment will be in the Meadowview Cemetery in Manhattan.
