Willie Earl "Doc" Burkhead, who served three terms as Henderson mayor in the late 1960s and early 1970s, died Monday at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital after a long illness. He was 76.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Casey Funeral Home with burial in the Chester County Memory Gardens.
Mr. Burkhead also served as alderman for a time after his terms as mayor and was on the Chester County Democratic Executive Committee. He was a retired employee of Bolton Ford. A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of the American Legion, past local and district commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was president of the Board of Directors of Senior Citizens of Chester County. He was Sunday school director at the First Baptist Church, where he was also trustee, past music director, past chairman of the board of deacons and past member of the church's executive board.
Mr. Burkhead, the husband of Eloise Massey Frost Burkhead, also leaves three stepdaughters, Margaret Rudin and Barbara Lepome, both of Las Vegas, and Dona Cantrell of Waukegan, Illionois; three sisters, Ida Quinn, Mary L.E. Garner and Minnie Pearl "Sis" Kilzer, and a brother, Jack Burkhead, all of Henderson.
