Jesse Wallace Powell, 78, of Brunswick, MO, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2019 at University Hospital in Columbia, MO. A memorial service will be held at Breshears Memorial Chapel in Brunswick, MO on December 28, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. Reverend Kentrell Lee will officiate the service. A visitation will precede the service from 12:00-1:00 P.M. A private family burial will be held at City Cemetery in Brunswick, MO at a later date.

Jesse was born on November 5, 1941 in Brunswick, MO, the son of Jesse and Anna Maria (Wilson) Powell. Jesse attended school in Brunswick, MO. On April 19, 1969, Jesse was united in marriage to Vivian Johnson in Brunswick, MO.

Jesse worked as a machine operator for Norfolk Southern railroad for 23 years. He also was a truck driver for most of his life. Jesse loved to work in the garden, loved fishing, picking pecans, and spending time with his friends and family. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a member of Zion AME Methodist Church in Brunswick, MO.

Jesse is survived by his beloved wife of the home, Vivian; five children, Howard Ervin of Alexandria, VA, Twila Ervin of Brunswick, MO, Marcia Ervin of Kansas City, MO, Darrell Ervin and his wife Christi of Marshall, MO, and Michelle Thames and her husband Kelly of St. Louis, MO; two sisters, Ruth Tatum of Columbia, MO and Lavella Evans of Charlotte, NC; eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Keith Ervin; his parents, Jesse and Anna Maria Powell; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Erma and Ira Gordon; two sisters, Joeretta Gilkey and Sophia Arnold; and three brothers-in-law, Elbert Tatum, Leroy Evans and Hayes Gilkey.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kellen Thames, Jakob Huff, Kaden Huff, Brent Hopkins, Michael Hopkins, Javeon Ervin, and Scott Steiman.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to First Missionary Baptist Church in Brunswick, MO. Donations may be left at or mailed to Breshears Memorial Chapel, 207 W. Broadway, Brunswick, MO, 65236.
