Joseph Ray “Babe” Kaylor, Glenwood resident and longtime community leader, departed to be with the Lord on Monday, January 27, 2020, 3 days prior to his 92nd birthday.
The son of the late George and Elmyra Kaylor, Joe was born in McDowell County, NC on January 30, 1928.
Joe enjoyed working outside around his home, walking at the YMCA and athletics. He was a huge supporter of Titan Athletics and attended many sports events and especially when his grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved. He refereed basketball for thirty years across North Carolina and he received a proclamation of achievement from the N.C. High School Athletic Association for his support of high school athletics and his tireless work and dedication to young people.
Not only was Joe devoted to his family, he also shared that same devotion for his community. Locally he served on the McDowell County Board of Education for 24 years, sixteen of those as chairman, and he has been a member of the Board of trustees at McDowell Technical Community College for sixteen years. Joe was also instrumental in the expansion of the Head Start, McSmiles and ROTC Programs. He was especially proud of his involvement with the McDowell Tooth Bus, which provided much needed dental care to the children of McDowell County. The Marion Kiwanis Club benefited from his participation as well.
Joe also served on the McDowell County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and completed one term as Industry Representative on the McDowell Economic Development Association and served for a period of time as a County Commissioner.
On the North Carolina State Level, Joe served on the State Board of Transportation in Raleigh and was active on the State Education Study Commission. He was also a recipient of the prestigious North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Joe was preceded in death by, in addition to his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Betty Sprinkle Kaylor; three daughters, Barbara Brewer (Jim), Kathy Brewer (Johnny) and Ida Mock (Larry), two sons; David Kaylor (Barbara) and Scott Kaylor (Kathy), all of Glenwood; two siblings, Margaret Earley of Concord, and Cecil Kaylor of Mountain City, TN. Joe is also survived by his nine beloved grandchildren; Nerissa Brewer Baker (Andy) of Blairsville, Georgia, Amanda Brewer Lael (Aaron) of Hickory, Chad Brewer (Sarah) of Glenwood, Carrie Brewer Franklin (Brian) of Glenwood, Aimee Brewer Yeates (Quincy) of Knoxville, TN., Sarah Brewer Lancaster (Zachary)of Canton, Kasey Mock Stevens (Jamie) of Old Fort, Bryant Mock (Marie) of Glenwood, and Matt Kaylor (Katie) of Glenwood; Eighteen great-grandchildren also carry on his legacy; Logan, Bryson, Trent, Mason, Brewer, Averie, Addyson, Marlee, Roby, Janee, Joanna, June, Ashri, Kaylor, Elaina, Lillie, Noah and Jonah.
A service to celebrate Joe’s life will be held on Friday, January 31, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. at Glenwood Baptist Church with Revs. Jim Brewer and Dennis Love officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. two hours prior to the service at the church. Following the service interment will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery. Having served faithfully in the U. S. Army Air Corps during WWII, Military Honors will be provided by the U. S. Army.
