Margaretha was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States before 1870, probably in the earlry 1860s. Her first husband was Joseph Kiehn, who possibly died in the Civil War. On Dec. 9, 1868, she married Joseph Degenhardt (he later dropped the second "d" making it Degenhart) in Freedom (now Hecker), Monroe County, IL. They were the parents of five children, including Joseph Christoph "Chris", Hugo Joseph, Adam, Dorothy Pauline "Lena" (Mrs. William Alonzo Kells) and Elizabeth Anne "Anna" (Mrs. David B. "Dick/Richard" Grubb). Hugo and Adam died young from eating rat poison and are buried in Pinckneyville, IL. In 1870 the family lived in Du Quoin Twp, Perry Co, IL and in 1880 they were in Tyrone Twp, Franklin Co, IL. By 1884, the family was in Cimarron, Gray Co, KS and then Haskell Co, KS. Margretha died in Plymell, Finney Co, KS, at the age of 55 from chronic liver disease and cancer of the stomach.
