Note: this memorial has been substantially updated on December 3 & 4, 2016 with maiden name, spouse links, and other information, some per edit requests and others from additional information found since this memorial was originally entered.

Certain following information is also now being updated using marriage information from Jefferson county, Iowa.

The nickname "Carrie" is being added to this memorial per the use of that name on the 1875 marriage record to Cornelius Simmons.

Fairfield Tribune
August 4, 1881
Pg. 3 Col. 2

Last Tuesday occurred the death of Mrs. Neil Simmons, of Des Moines township. Mrs. Simmons had been in comparatively poor health for some time, but on the morning of Tuesday felt no worse than usual, assisted about the household duties until afternoon, when she was attacked by a congestive chill which proved fatal before night. The remains were interred at the Winsell Graveyard the following day.

Note: this memorial is being updated on December 4, 2016 with the death location entered as Jefferson county, Iowa, inasmuch as the obituary indicated that she died in Des Moines township. No death record for Caroline was filed, however, though that would not have been unusual for a rural death in 1881 since Iowa didn't mandate death records to be recorded until 1880. Many rural deaths were not recorded, so often the only way to know about a death is information on a headstone or information found in a published obituary (or, obviously, any family sources such as a family bible).

---------------
Caroline's maiden name now does appear to be "Newland" - Caroline (A. or E. for middle name, depending on sources) Newland Quakenbush Simmons is buried* in a line of graves of other Newland's in Winsell Cemetery, but the attributed birth dates for those Newland's suggest that while they may be related to Caroline as, perhaps, sibling(s), there isn't any DOB that would indicate that her parents are buried in the same cemetery. A check of family group sheets in the Fairfield Public Library does not provide enough information to determine a direct relationship link, but obviously it would seem that they were, at least somehow.

* The Winsell cemetery was canvassed by Orville and Mary Prill in the fall of 1962 for inscription data and their listings were typed up and compiled and placed in the genealogy reference section of the Fairfield Public Library.

It should be noted that the current headstone w/inscription now found for Caroline was not present in the fall of 1962. It may well be that some family descendant, once the cemetery was cleaned up (it was in poor condition in 1962) had the fairly modern headstone w/inscription placed in the cemetery to honor Caroline. Now whether or not it is literally "over" the grave of Caroline is not known - it could have been placed where it is beside the headstone of the daughter, Mary A.J. Quakenbush, with the thought that she would be buried beside her, but there are no cemetery records available to prove exactly where Caroline was buried.

---------------
Marriages:

Jefferson county marriage records show that Caroline was married twice - in doing so the marriages showed the bride using a "surname", not necessarily being the same as maiden name. As a result, some early cemetery listings inadvertently appear to have misconstrued the maiden name and attributed subsequent married surnames instead.

> On June 25, 1861, marriage license # 2082, is recorded a "Thomas Quakenbush" (no age provided) marrying "Caroline A. Newland" (no age provided) by John Haynes - Minister.

A spouse link to a "Thomas Quackenbush", 1838-1864, is being made on December 4, 2016 per edit request. Note that the surname was/is spelled "Quackenbush", which may have been an engraving error on his particular veteran headstone (assuming that the Jefferson county, Iowa, marriage record information was not in error in and of itself, of course).

Caroline is thought, but not proven, to be buried next to that of daughter, Mary A.J. Quakenbush (see: Mary A J Quakenbush) at Winsell Cemetery. Not known if there were any other children born to Thomas and Caroline.

> Caroline (using first name Carrie, and middle initial E.) was then married to a Cornelius 'Neil' Simmons on January 21, 1875 (marriage license # 4309), "At house of Jacob Newland; J.D. Walker M.G.". Cornelius age was listed as aged 31, and Carrie as aged 28. The surname used for Caroline/Carrie was listed as "Quakenbush", so evidently she used the first married surname when she married Cornelius, thus causing some misinterpretation of her maiden name.

Cornelius was first married to a Jane Ann Kuhn on February 8, 1866 in Jefferson county, Iowa (marriage license # 2668). She was born in 1846 and died in 1872. They had at least three known children, two of whom are also buried in Winsell cemetery, probably near where the family lived at that time.

A spouse relationship link from Caroline to Cornelius Simmons is being made on December 4, 2016 per edit request.
