The family had their share of tragedy.

The Lake Review Osakis, Douglas County, Minnesota Thursday, October 15, 1896 Page 3, Col. 2. A Card of Thanks. We offer our most heartfelt thanks to all our friends and neighbors who so kindly helped us in our bereavement, and also for the nice flowers. Mr. and Mrs. John Ripley The Lake Review Osakis, Douglas County, Minnesota Thursday, October 15, 1896 Page 3, Col. 4. The 7-months old son of John D. Ripley of this village met death last Thursday in a very sad manner. In a way that is almost unaccountable the older brother of the infant, a little fellow of about three years, tipped the child’s high chair over onto his grandmother who was pouring boiling water from a tea kettle, knocking the kettle from her hands and pouring the hot water onto the babe, scalding it to an extent that recovery was impossible. The child lived two days. The funeral was held from the M. E. church last Sunday afternoon, Rev. Mower officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Ripley have the sympathy of all. Transcribed from microfilm copy of newspaper at Minnesota History Center, St. Paul, MN.
