A son of John Hall and Eliza (Reeder) Braden, Walter S. moved with his parents to IL where he joined his father in the management of J. H. Braden & Sons, a dry goods establishment. Following the death of his father, the sons continued the business under the name Braden Brothers.

Walter married first Elizabeth J. Wilson, and following her death, he married Carrie L. Veyette. Walter and Elizabeth were parents of two sons, Frank Walter and John Benton, and a daughter Gertrude Mary.
