A son of John Hall and Eliza J. (Reeder) Braden, Robert J. was a part of J. H. Braden & Sons, a dry goods establishment in Ludlow, IL owned by his father.

About 1900, Mr. Braden purchased acreage in MIddleport Township of Iroquois Co., IL which he farmed for several years. He married Sidney Ann Duncan Sep. 2, 1868 and the couple parented seven children: four sons, Asa D., Clark, Frank and Scott; and three daughters, Nancy L., Mary A. and Josephine E.
