British nobility, Knight and Baronet. He was educated at Oxford and served in the British Royal Army before coming to America. He came to Virginia in 1650. In 1656 he served as a member of the House of Burgesses from Lancaster County, Virginia and in 1674 a member of the Council of Virginia. He served as Govenor of Virginia from December 30, 1678 to May 10, 1680.
