“In life, we had pleasures with our loved ones we have sorrows and joy but thank God for the memories that death cannot destroy.”

Again, death has invaded the rank of the Bread of Life Missionary Baptist Church. It has carried away not only a Christian Woman, faithful member, teacher, loving wife, beautiful mother, precious grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and dear friend but a saint who heeded the scripture working diligently in many capacities of the ministry for the edification of the Body of Christ.

Sister Sanders affectionately called “Lucille” by her husband, family members and friends knew that Christianity did not exempt one from death but ensured triumph over death.

On Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at 6:13 a.m. Sister Lucille Sanders pulled off mortal and put on immortality, making the transition to her heavenly home at Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph, Michigan surrounded by her children and beautiful niece, Ramona.

The serviceable mortal life of Lucille Sanders was born into time on June 24, 1936, in Hughes, Arkansas, to the Christian lineage of the late John Otley and Clara Annabelle Archibald-nee Spencer. She was preceded in death by her parents, mother and father-in-law, Willie and Mayetta Sanders; (1) son, Alfred Sanders; (3) brothers, Willie “Bully” Horton Sr., Johnny William Archibald, William Fletcher Archibald; (3) sisters, Ozell Archibald, Effie G. Clay, Hermine Watts; and God-daughter, Donquella Reid-Singh.

At an early age, Sister Sanders dedicated her life to Christ as evidenced by her uniting in fellowship with the St. Mary Baptist Church in Hughes, under the pastoral guidance of the late Rev. Frank Jones. In January of 1956, she relocated to Benton Harbor and immediately united with the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Bishop W.E. Ellis.

In 1969, she united with the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. C.L. Woodson and in 1983, she became faithful member of the Bread of Life Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Robert Lee DeFrance Sr. and First Lady Joyce DeFrance whom she loved dearly and served faithfully until her health began to fail.

Lucille was formally educated in Marianna, Arkansas and was a proud alumnus of Robert R. Motton High School. She would often share stories of being educated in the segregated south and how powerful their schools were although operating with little, but having loads of love, caring teachers and strong school leaders.

In 1970, Lucille was very proud when she obtained her General Education Diploma from Lake Michigan College and later became a graduate of the Moody Bible College and Institute in South Bend.

A devout Christian, she never refused to help anyone in need and never missed an opportunity to tell others about her Risen Savior, Jesus Christ. Sister Sanders served in many capacities in the church. Throughout her Christian journey on earth, she served as a member of the Radio and Senior Choirs, Willing Workers, Pastor’s Aide, Sunday School Teacher and she was a prayer warrior. She truly believed that a powerful and consistent prayer life was more than life itself.

Sister Sanders loved to sing and would often brag about how Pilgrim Rest had the “baddest” choir in Southwest Michigan. One of her favorite songs was “Have I Given Anything Today” and the last song she sung on this side was “I Got Something to Tell Jesus When I Get Home”.

On Sept. 6, 1981, she was united in holy matrimony to her childhood friend of 73 years, Richard Edward Sanders by the late Rev. C.L. Woodson in Benton Harbor, Michigan, and within this blended family, ten children were born.

Lucille worked for Heath Company for many years and retired from Michigan State University Cooperative Extension Services as a Nutrition Instructor where many lifelong friendships and a sisterhood of love were developed with all the women there. Annie Lenoir, Jean Bunton, Emma Fields, Veda Marques, Pat Jefferson, Sandra Stewart, Mary Davis, Lila Griffin, Daisy Moore, Mary Miller, Beatrice Charles, Mary Baird, and Alma Sanders were forever special in her life. Upon retirement, she and her husband became the proud owners of the Southside Superstop Convenience Store and were loved by all whom they served.

She was a loyal and devoted public servant and was honored to serve on the Board of Directors at Mercy Hospital in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The young women she served while working on Expanded Food and Nutrition initiatives will forever remember lessons taught and will be passed on to generations to come.

Lucille was kind-hearted, witty, honest, genuine, giving, comedic, loving and most of all she cherished her family and loved God. One of the greatest gifts she gave to this world was that of being a loving and dedicated mother to her devoted daughter, Sharon Renee whom she loved dearly, her three sons, the eldest, Joe Anthony, the middle one Rodger Reinaldo and her baby boy Keith Andre.

She truly loved her children and grandchildren with all her heart and in her last days, she would tell them that they were the sweetest children ever and that she was so proud to be their mother.

Lucille will forever be remembered in the hearts of her husband, Richard Sanders whom she adored and honored; (9) children: Joe Anthony Archibald, Reinaldo (Marian) Tripplett, Sharon (Damarco) James, Brenda (Darren) Matthews, all of Benton Harbor; Keith (Leticia) Sanders of Memphis, TN, Cathey (Rocky) Quintana, of Dallas, TX, Nerissa (Kevin) Williams and Lynette Sanders, both of Grand Rapids, Valerie (Darryle) Cheatham of Greer, SC;, (4) sisters: Willie B. Robinson, Rosie Hicks, Mary Williams, Emma Hull; (2) sisters-of-love, Perona (Duane) Mitchell, Estelle Hawkins and Georgia (Clarence) Willis; (4) sisters-in-law: Vera Anderson, Lela Sanders, Flora Mabins, Linda Sanders; (1) brother-in-law: Larry Sanders; (3) Godchildren: Zephera (Ralph) Gipson-Holman, Cory McGinnis and John(Anja) Holmes; (1) aunt, Fannie Mae Bowens; her Dialysis Divas, Keisha, Ree Ree, Dawana, and Victoria; (30) grandchildren, (48) great-grandchildren, (4) great-great grandchildren; her Bread of Life Church family and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. And there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying neither shall there be any more pain” Revelations 21
