John R. Cowan was born Dec. 11, 1797 in Sullivan Co.,Tn. to Robert Cowan and Nancy Rutledge. The dates are taken from his tombstone, which is not perfectly legible, but supported by the age at death, and the document found on ancestry.com, and added here, on the McWilliams family titled: Al. Surname Files Expanded, 1702-1981. The dates in that document correlate with the age at time of death. John first married Charlotte Keyes, Jan 20, 1820 in Limestone Co., Al. Charlotte was born 1797, died 1826, and was the daughter of patriot John Wade Keyes and Louisa/Luvisa Talbot. Louisa was a niece of President Monroe. Charlotte's grave hasn't been located, but her parents were buried at their plantation, 3 miles from Athens, Limestone Co., Al., until they were re-interred through the "John Wade Keyes" Chapter of the D.A.R., to the Athens City Cemetery about 1912. It is reasonable to assume Charlotte could be buried on the plantation as well. John Cowan and Charlotte Keyes had the following two children: Louisa Keyes Cowan (1823-1892), who married John Moore Ray, in Limestone Co., Al.; George Robert Cowan (1821-1905), who married Julia Anne Thomison, they resided, and are buried in Fayetteville, Lincoln, Tn. After the death of Charlotte, John married Manerva McWilliams, daughter of Andrew B. McWilliams and Elizabeth J. Robertson, who were some of the first settlers of Limestone Co.Al., and pillars of the Limestone Co. New Garden Presbyterian Church, near Elkmont, Limestone, Al. John and Manerva had the following children: Elizabeth M. (Eleanor), who married Samuel Marion Scott, secondly married Gordon Parsons; John R., who married Eliza Schrimsher; Mary T. Cowan, who married Peyton R. Newgent in Madison Co., Al., secondly married Woodson Phillips in Al.
John acquired 80.09 acres in Limestone Co., Al. in 1833. He and wife Manerva died 5 days apart of unknown causes. John was 63 years old at time of death, according to his tombstone. Madison Co. Al. Probate Records show his estate files, as well as the fact that they left an infant son at their deaths, who was placed under guardianship of their daughter Mary T. and husband Peyton R. Newgent.
