Mary was first married to Peyton R. Newgent, they had three children. Mary was widowed when her children were small, during a raid of their home by Union soldiers who killed her husband, then set fire to their home. Eventually she remarried to Woodson Phillips, a widower and also a Confederate Soldier with a small son. Mary finished raising the son after Woodson died and left her to raise his son John Phillips alone. Mary died of tuberculosis.
