Ernest, as he was called by his family, died of acute coronary thrombosis. He was a retired night watchman for Security Storage and Van Company in Norfolk, Virginia. Ernest left behind to mourn his passing his wife, Ola Bell (Stakes) Gray, three daughters: Page (Gray) Godfrey, Mary "Tookie" (Gray) Price, Bertha (Gray) Styron, one son: Clyde Ernest Gray, thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Ernest's parents were Samuel Littleton and Martha "Mattie" Gray. His father served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant at the tender age of only 15. Shortly thereafter, he assumed command of his own company.
