Served as a private in Co. I, 156th New York Infantry. He was severely wounded in both legs at the third battle of Winchester (also known as the Battle of Opequon) which took place on Sept. 19, 1864. The battle was a costly but decisive victory for Union forces. Pvt. Blake was discharged for wounds from McDougall Hospital, New York on 3/14/1865, and died shortly thereafter (exact date not known). Pvt. Blake was a brave Staten Islander who answered the call and sacrificed everything.
