Frankie served in the US Army from 1942 until 1945 during WWII. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the Invasion of Normandy. He traveled all over Northern Europe and received the Bronze Star.
After the service, he came back to Sparta and later purchased a farm just north of Sparta. He farmed for about 15 years. He married Edna Axelsen on September 18, 1965 in Sparta by Reverend Fredericks. He then worked for the the Monroe County Courthouse as a custodian until he retired in 1984.
Frankie enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and traveling. He was a member of the VFW Post 2112 in Sparta.
He is survived by his wife, Edna of Sparta; his children, Lois (Ronnie) Johnson of West Salem and Violet (Duane) Sletten of Sparta; 6 grandchildren, Rhonda (Daniel) Puckhaber, Brad (Stacie) Johnson, Michael (Jennifer) Sletten, Greg (Shirley) Sletten, Crista (William) Stark, and Cari (Michael) Courtney; 22 great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Victor Axelsen; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wilford, Albert, and William; and sisters, Alice, Hazel, Alma, and Mae.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta, with Reverend Benito Agtarap officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by VFW Post 2112 will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.
Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of services. Memorials may be offered to the Cataract United Methodist Church.
