New York - Sept 6 - Heyward G Leavitt of 187 School St, Belmont, MA, prominent in the beet sugar industry in the Middle West, died here last night while on a visit to the city. He was a native of this city and 68 years old.

Mr Leavitt was graduated at Harvard College, being graduated with the Class of 1882, and then went to Columbia University Law School. He practiced law or about a year. With the late Henry T Oxnard, Mr Leavitt started a sugar refining business from sugar beets at Grand Island, NE, after which Mr Leavitt opened his own factory. He later became a Director of the Savannah Sugar Refinery at Savannah Georgia.

He made his home in Omaha, NE about 25 years before he moved to Massachusetts a year ago. He is survived by his wife, whom he married 30 years ago; a daughter, Mrs Francis Durfee Johnson of Belmont; 3 sons, Heyward L and David H Leavitt, both of Cambridge, and George C Leavitt of Belmont; and 4 sisters.

Mr Leavitt was a member of the Harvard Clubs of Boston and New York, the A D Club of Harvard, the Dome Lake Club of Sheridan, WY, and several other Western Organizations.

Howard G Leavitt, former President of land and irrigation companies in the West and former President of the Standard Beet Sugar Co. and the Great Western Beet Sugar Co., died yesterday at his apartment at 719 Lexington Ave, Manhattan. He was 66. He left a wife and four children.

Hayward Leavitt, who died suddenly in New York last week, lived here at one time. He was a son of the late Henry S and Martha Leavitt who owned Brookside about 50 years ago. Mr Leavitt, who was in his 67th year, spent many summers in Great Barrington, his family being very prominent in their day in New York. He played for a few seasons on the old Nonesuch Baseball Team which was a crack nine and was very active in its management.

The will of Heyward Gibbons Leavitt, who died on September 5, was filed in the surrogate's court in New York last week. Mr Leavitt was an organizer of irrigation and land projects in the West and also was interested in sugar companies.

Under his will, Mrs Alvina Leavitt of Belmont, widow, receives a bequest of $1000 and two thirds of the income from the estate. The other third of the income is to go to Luise Sarson, of Honolulu, a friend. Four children receive $500 each.

Mr Leavitt was a son of the late Henry S Leavitt, who owned Brookside for a number of years. When a young man, the family lived at Brookside during the summer months.
