On October 30, 1800, William was married to Sarah Buckles in Hamilton County, OH. They lived in Greene Co, OH at first, later moving to Clark County, OH by 1820. In 1825, he purchased 80 acres of land in Rush Co, Indiana and the family settled there near where the town of Burlington (now Arlington) which was laid out by his nephew Levin Birt in 1830.
William and Sarah were the parents of 15 children. In the early 1850's William and Sarah left Rush County and settled in Jasper Co, IL along with some of their children and were living there when the 1855 Census was taken. But a few years later, he and Sarah moved back to Indiana, settling in Pike Twp in Marion County where William wrote his will and died August 11th, 1859. His place of burial is unknown, but is possibly in Crown Hill Cemetery in Pike Twp, as that is where his son Henry is buried.
His widow Sarah was found twice in the 1860 Census, one showed her living with grandchildren (children of her daughter Jane Birt Cowger) back in Rush County, another showing her living in Pike Township, Marion Co, IN with her son David Heaton Birt's family. Finally, by 1869, she moved back to Ohio probably to live near her sister Jane Buckles Carmen. She died in Ohio in 1869 and was buried at Honey Creek Cemetery in Christiansburg, Champaign Co, Ohio near her sister Jane Buckles Carmin.
