Shirley Aidekman-Kaye was born in Newark, NJ on March 15, 1923 to Bella (nee Gersten) and Samuel Fishman. Following graduation from high school and through WWII she worked as a secretary at Phoenix Brass Co. in Newark. On November 3, 1946 she married Leo Halpern. Leo took ill and died a few months later. While Leo was ill, to make ends meet, she partnered with his cousin, Lawrence and opened a laundromat in Union. In 1948 after becoming a widow, customers of the laundromat, George and Irene Lieberberg, introduced her to Alex Aidekman. They were married on June 5, 1949.

Shortly thereafter, Shirley provided Alex her savings from the laundromat to finance his first supermarket, Uniondale, in Union. She became the store's secretary and bookkeeper. With the success of this business, Alex went on to co-found Wakefern, a supermarket cooperative trading under the Shop-Rite name and later became chairman of Supermarkets General Corp. trading as Pathmark.

Shirley left her role as secretary and bookkeeper as Alex's success grew and she engaged in several philanthropic, business, artistic and athletic endeavors and achievements. Renowned for generosity, Shirley and Alex's philanthropy included the Aidekman Arts Center at Tufts University, The Aidekman Campus of the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest, NJ, the Aidekman Research Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience at Rutgers University, and The Aidekman Chair in Neurology at Mt Sinai Medical School.

Alex developed Parkinson's Disease in the mid-70's. Shirley managed his care until his death in 1990. A few years later, Shirley met a widower, Bennie Kaye.
