Sydney served as a Utility Man, S.S. John Morgan, U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II.

It is currently unknown where he resided prior to the war.

The S.S. John Morgan, during it's maiden voyage, collided with the S.S. Montana off Cape Henry on the coast of Virginia. The John Morgan broke in two and sank immediately. The collision caused fires to also breakout on the S.S. Montana which was damaged but survived the collision.

The U.S.S. Shubrick (DD-639), U.S.S. Herndon (DD-638), and the U.S.S. Nelson (DD-623) were sent to try to locate any survivors. However they didn't find any but were able to recover the remains of 12 that were found in the area.

The S.S. John Morgan lost 42 of their Merchant Marine Crew and 25 Navy Armed Guards. The S.S. Montana lost 9 of her Crew and also 10 U.S. Navy Armed Guards.

Sydney was declared "Missing" in the "Line Of Duty" in this sinking during the war.

Note: The Merchant Mariners suffered the highest rate of casualties of any service in World War II.
