About 8 o'clock this morning, James M. Darneille, a prominent and well-known citizen of Chatham, died very suddenly. His sudden and unexpected decease has cast a pall over our community. Mr. Darneille was a native of Sangamon county, born Jan. 22, 1823, within a few miles of where he resided all his life. His father, John Darneille, came from Bourbon county, Ky., in 1819, and settled at what was known as Turkey Point, in Chatham township, but the following year removed to a point on Lick Creek, five miles west of the present town of Chatham. James Darneille was married Jan. 1, 1852, to Clarissa Kinney, by whom he had six children. One daughter, Miss Caroline K., a few years ago, married Hon. Walter F. Carlin, of Jerseyville; another, Miss Maggie H., married Mr. John Lewis, cashier of the Chatham bank, and a third, Miss Florence, married Mr. Edward Lewis, now of Omaha, Neb. The oldest son, John H., is in the mercantile business in Chatham and two other sons, Charles A. and James M., still under age, have resided with their parents.

Mr. Darneille spent his early life on a farm and had been engaged as a stock-dealer, but retired with a competency some years ago, and has since resided in Chatham. At the time of his death he was a Director of the State National bank, of this city, and had been for many years. He was noted for his integrity, high principle and public spirit. Politically, he was an earnest Republican and one of the most liberal and zealous supporters of the candidates and principles of that party.

It is understood that the Masons will take charge of his funeral and that the remains are to be interred at Oak Ridge. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL 6-6-1888.
