Death Friday night summoned Walter E Baker, Tuolumne county deputy sheriff for the past en years. Ill for the past several weeks, two emergency operations were performed in an effort to save the pace officer's life,
A native of Red Bluff, Baker had lived in Tuolumne county for the past 29 years. He was the first engaged as a sawyer in a local lumber mill, later becoming an automobile salesman, the chief deputy sheriff ten years ago under Sheriff J H Dambacher.
Surviving is his wife, Mrs Elizabeth Baker, Sonora,, his mother, Mrs Lillian Webster, Melbourne, Wash., a son, Eldred Baker, Berkeley, three sisters, Mrs Miriam Foshay, Yakima, Wash., Mrs Jeanette Lewis, Aberdeen, Wash., and Mrs Illene Alexander , Seattle, Wash., and three brothers, Winifred I Baker, a twin, Sacramento, Irwin Baker, Klamath Falls, Ore., and Archie Baker, Melbourne, Wash.
Services were held Monday afternoon at the Terzich and Bigelow Funeral Home under the auspices of the Elks' Lodge with the odd Fellows conducting graveside services. Internment was i nthe Odd Fellows' cemetery.
1920 census - has him listed as a widowed millwright with his in-laws the Peters, and a son Francis E b 1916
1930 census - has him listed as an auto salesman, living in Sonora with wife Mary b 1888 from Pennsylvania, her mother Aureila Rundell and her brothers Thomas and Joseph
WWI registration of 1918 lists his home as Sonora, his age as 33, his occupation as millwright for Standard lumber and his contact as Eldred, Baker, son.
