The son of John H. & Elizabeth Keim or Kime, he married Barbara Noel and fathered Peter (b. 03/13/38, d. 01/02/41), Franklin (b. 04/21/39), Mary Elizabeth (b. 04/??/41), David (b. 09/25/44 - 101st Pa), Daniel Noel (b. @1846), Caroline Meals (b. @1848), Ferdinand Milton (b. 06/15/50), James Alexander (b. @1851), Margaret Ann Jane (b. 10/02/53), George Rhodes (b. 05/11/56), and Harriet Susan & Sarah Alice (b. 05/06/58). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg September 29, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 5 as a private with Co. K, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry. He was shot in the left elbow May 31, 1862, at the battle of Fair Oaks (Seven Pines) and discharged by surgeon's certificate September 23, 1862. He served in the same company as sons David and Franklin.
