"In 1917, David [Kupele] married Annie Aiona, a beautiful young Hawaiian-German-Chinese woman who had come to Kalaupapa in 1916. In a community where early deaths prevented most spouses from growing old together, David and Annie lived to be the first couple to celebrate a fiftieth wedding anniversary at Kalaupapa."
