Milton Barlow, former Marriott leader, dies

CHEVY CHASE, Md. — Milton A. Barlow, 89, a former real estate developer, CEO of the Marriott Corp. and LDS Church mission president, died April 6, 2001, at his home here.

J.W. Marriott persuaded Mr. Barlow to join his then small family company in 1941. Mr. Barlow a senior executive there for 23 years, overseeing much of the Marriott Corp.'s expansion. He also helped guide Marriott's first public stock offering in 1953 and the company's move into hotel development.

Mr. Barlow formed the Barlow Corp. in 1964 in the Washington area after retiring from Marriott. In 1983, he and his youngest daughter, Gloria, established the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at Brigham Young University. This helped endow hundreds of composers internationally and one student, Melinda Wagner, won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Music.

He had also been president of the board of the Washington Hospital Center and was a member of the Washington Council Executive Committee of the Boy Scouts of America, the Washington Chapter of the American Red Cross and many other organizations. He received the BYU Presidential Citation in 1996.

Born in Clearfield, Utah, Mr. Barlow attended LDS High School in Salt Lake City and graduated from both George Washington University and Harvard Business School. He lived in the Washington area for 60 years.

In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mr. Barlow had been a bishop, temple worker and also as the president of the church's New York Rochester Mission in the mid-1970s. While in that capacity, he and his wife, Gloria, helped the church acquire the building where the first Book of Mormon was printed in Palmyra, N.Y., and also assisted in the restoration of the cabin where the LDS Church was organized on April 6, 1830.

Funeral will be Wednesday, April 11, at 11 a.m. at the Chevy Chase LDS Chapel, 5460 Western Ave., Chevy Chase, Md. Burial will be in the Park Lawn Cemetery in Rockville, Md.
