Tommie Ainsworth, age 87, of Greenwood, Mississippi, passed away on August 31, 2019, at his home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Doug Segars will officiate. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows East Cemetery.

Tommie was born February 22, 1932, in Zama, Mississippi, to Edward Howard Ainsworth and Ida Mae Stone Ainsworth. Tommie grew up in the Zama community with siblings, Riley Ainsworth and Syble Adams, who are deceased, and sisters, Emma Provenza, of Greenville, Mississippi, and Becky Stovall (Curtis) of Yazoo County, Mississippi.

Tommie attended and graduated from Holmes Jr. College and later Delta State University. He served in the U.S. Army, serving in Europe in the 1950’s. After returning from service, he married Billie Sue Cooper Ainsworth of Greenwood, and they celebrated life together until her death in 2012.

Tommie began his career teaching history and coaching at Coxburg, Mississippi, before starting a long career with State Farm Insurance in Greenwood, beginning as a claim representative and then as an agent for a total of 55 years, retiring in 2014.

Tommie was a member and deacon with the West President Church of Christ in Greenwood. He served in many capacities there from Sunday School teacher, Treasurer, and Preacher when needed. He also served for many years as a leader in the Leflore County Prison ministry.

Tommie’s hobbies included coaching softball in the Greenwood for many years. He also served as a radio announcer for Greenwood High football games and later Cruger-Tchula Academy as an announcer for basketball and other events. He enjoyed duck hunting and gardening as well, and did both as often as he could. He loved distributing his tomatoes to the community, and a visitor to his State Farm office was likely to leave with a bag of tomatoes in addition to their policy.

Tommie was an avid sports fan and loved the Ole Miss Rebels, any sport, but especially football.

In later years, Tommie loved going to the farmer’s market and supplying the community and family with fresh vegetables as well as soup and gumbo and other foods that he would prepare.

Their children are Pam Ainsworth Easley (deceased), Cindy Ainsworth Lunsford of Lake City, Arkansas, Thomas Dean Ainsworth (Dana) of Greenwood, Allen Cooper Ainsworth of Pearl, MS, and Robin Ainsworth Kelly (Jim) of Clinton, MS. In addition to their children, Tommie and Billie Sue leave behind grandchildren Cary Easley Brantley, (Steven), Alicia Ainsworth, Laurie Beth Easley McCaa (Trent), Barry Ainsworth, Allison Ainsworth Williams (Chase), John Hays, Elizabeth Kelly Pardue (Stephen), Coleman Hays, John Cooper Kelly, and Emma Kate Ainsworth. Step-Grandchildren include Jordan, Sara Beth and Claire Toole.

In addition, there are 10 great-grandchildren and many extended family and friends.

Pallbearers will be John Hays, Barry Ainsworth, Cooper Kelly, Sam Sutherland, Jacob Sutherland, and Chase Williams.

Military Rites will be conducted by Keesler-Hamrick-Gillespie American Legion Post 29.
