Elbert served as a Corporal, Company C, 6th North Carolina Infantry, Confederate State of America.

He married Martha Helon Rigsbee, daughter of Mark Rigsby and Winnifred Marcom, on February 18, 1860. They had one child, Martha Ella Picket DOB 04 Apr 1861 in Orange County, NC.

He enlisted in Company C, North Carolina 6th Infantry Regiment on May 1, 1861. During the first Battle of Manassas he was wounded on July 21, 1861 and ended up being mustered out on October 2, 1861 due to is wounding.

He re-enlisted in the North Carolina 6th Infantry Regiment, Company C, on September 22, 1862 and was given the rank of Full Private. Elbert was promoted to 4th Corporal on January 1, 1863.

He was wounded a second time in the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863 the first day of fighting.

Elbert was taken as a POW by the Union Army in the Second Battle of Rappahannock Station on November 7, 1863 and was sent to the Union POW camp at Point Lookout, Maryland.

He died during the Civil War "While A POW" at Point Lookout.

After Elbert's death, Martha went on to marry Levi F. Cates.
