On 4 March 1858, he married Martha Borland (seen as Bowling and other spellings) in Orange Co.
As was the case with many of his siblings and other relatives, William fought in the War Between the States. Prior to his service, he'd been a farmer.
On 15 July 1862, he enlisted as a Private in Company F, 1st Infantry Regiment North Carolina.
He lost his life in the Battle of Gettysburg on 2 July 1863.
Unfortunately, the final resting place of the majority of Confederate dead from that battle remains unknown, with many haphazardly buried in shallow, mass graves.
We are attempting to determine whether he was returned to NC, but chances are he was not. And if he's still in Pennsylvania, who knows where?
