Israel Barney was born June 17, 1675 at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts to Jacob and Ann Witt Barney. He married a woman named Elizabeth, for whom there is some confusion. Although some show her as Elizabeth Brackett, daughter of Josiah and Elizabeth Waldo Brackett, marriage records of Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts clearly show her as Elizabeth Barrett born February 11, 1678 in Rehoboth. Her Barrett parents are unknown at this time. Israel and Elizabeth Barrett were married November 18, 1696 at Rehoboth and the children we're aware of are: Josiah, Israel, Samuel and Elizabeth. There possibly were others, including Richard. The family moved to Rehoboth (most likely from Salem) in 1704 and to Newport, Rhode Island after 1720. Israel was a selectman in Rehoboth in 1719/1720. He died after 1720 and is probably buried in the Newman Cemetery in East Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, where his wife is buried.
