Herman Schultz of Varina, a pioneer of Buena Vista County, passed away at his home at Varina, on last thursday following a paralytic stroke. He was 77 years, 5 months and 26 days of age. Mr. Schultz came to Buena Vista County in 1871 and was employed by the railroad company that built the line through Newell. After the road was built he was section foreman for several years. He was also a barber in Newell for five years. He purchased a farm near here shortly after coming to the county for five dollars per acre, and a few years after his marriage to Miss Lovina Hassencamp at Vinton, Iowa in 1872, the family moved to the farm. In 1921 they moved to Newell, and shortly thereafter went to Varina where their daughter was employed, to make their home. He was a large stockholder in the Newell Lumber and Coal Company and the Farmers Cooperative Supply Company. He is survived by his wife and five children, 12 grandchildren, two brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at Varina Sunday afternoon, and interment was at Newell. Mr. Schultz was a member of the council at Varina and mayor.
