A biography published in 1885 stated that Mr. Williams was born October 30, 1824. His obituary gave his age at death as 78 years, 6 months and 18 days, which renders an approximate birthdate of September 30, 1824. In the 1900 census, the month and year of his birth were reported as October 1823. The year inscribed on his tombstone is 1824.The Macomb Journal, page 5

Williams.

Lafayette Williams, sr., died at his late home, 626 South Lafayette sreet [sic], at 3:45 o'clock Saturday afternoon, aged 78 years, 6 months and 18 days. Funeral services were held at the late residence at 11 o'clock a. m. Monday interment in Oakwood cemetery.

Deceased was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, and came to this state in 1854, settling on a farm in Eldorado township. He lived there one year and then with his brother, Washington Williams, purchased a farm of 212 acres in Bethel township. They lived there until the fall of 1862, when they dissolved partnership. He then moved to New Salem township, where he lived until he moved to this city some 12 years ago.

He was married to Emily S. Dailey while yet a resident of Ohio, who with five children survive [sic]. Mr. Williams was a successful farmer and a good citizen. He was a member of the Methodist church during the greater portion of his life and a man who bore the respect of all his acquaintances.
