Daughter of John C. and Lucy J. McGraw of Livingston Co., Kentucky and later of Helena, Phillips Co., Arkansas. Widow of Powell Clayton, the latter of whom had served as a Union Army General, Arkansas Governor, United States Senator, and Ambassador to Mexico. Powell Clayton and Adeline McGraw had married in Phillips County on 14 Dec 1865.

Mrs. Clayton listed the purpose of her trip as visiting her daughter Kathleen, whose husband Arthur C. Grant Duff was a diplomat posted in England; "Mrs. Clayton Dies in Oxted, England," Daily Arkansas Gazette (Little Rock, Arkansas: 18 Jan 1917), p. 5; "Mrs. Clayton's Will Filed," Evening Star (Washington, DC: 20 Jan 1917) p. 7. The reader will note that there are a few minor inaccuracies in her obituary, which was distributed widely.
