With his two brothers, Bill and John, he operated the family drugstore in Pawcatuck with three generations of family.
He was born in 1921, son of C. Leo and Marie Higgins of Pawcatuck and was the husband of Mary (McKenney) Higgins. His children are Blanche Higgins, Elizabeth LuPriore (and husband, Anthony) and Joseph Higgins (and wife, April). Grandchildren are Anna and Matthew Tommasini, Aaron, James and Emily Higgins; and great granddaughter, Lilly Parker Higgins. His sister is Marie (Higgins) Marr.
He graduated from St. Michael's, Stonington High School, and R.I. College of Pharmacy. During World War II, he served in the Navy as pharmacist mate, assigned to the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Pacific Fleet.
He was active in Westerly-Pawcatuck community affairs for decades and helped found the Stonington Community Credit Union, Westerly Ambulance Corps and the Downtown Task Force. He also served as president of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the Providence Wholesale Drug Co. and was trustee of St. Michael parish.
Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, in Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, in St. Mary's Church, 95 Main St., Stonington. There is no procession to the church from the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery, Pawcatuck.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Michael's Church, c/o St. Michael's Capital Campaign, 60 Liberty St., Pawcatuck, CT 06379 in Leo's memory.
