ANNA ELINS KILLED IN N.Y. BRIDGE CRASH
United Press International
Anna Elins, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Elins, Martinsburg, W.Va., was one of two woman killed in a two vehicle collision on a New York City bridge.
Two women were killed and three men were injured in the collision of a sports car and a van on the lower level of the Queensboro Bridge, police said.
The driver of the Porsche sports car was charged with driving while intoxicated and two counts of second-degree manslaughter, a police spokesman said.
Ms. Elins, a writer, was a former resident of Martinsburg.
The sports car driver was identified as George Figlia, 32, of 303 E. 37th St., Manhattan. Figlia was injured in the collision.
The crash occurred Tuesday about 11:40 p.m. on the lower-level of the bridge, when the Porsche, bound for Queens, swerved into oncoming traffic on the Manhattan-bound lanes.
The car slammed head-on with a Dodge van driven by Ralph Zullo 20, of the Bronx, police said.
Two women riding in the Porsche with Figlia were killed. They were identified as Anna Elins, of 6940 Yellowstone Blvd., Forest Hills, and Dorothea Beckwith of 344 8th St., Jackson Heights, both in Queens. Police said both women were in their 30s.
Services for Miss Elins will be held in New York, tentatively set for Friday, with burial to be in Martinsburg, according to a secretary in Elins' firm of Berkeley Upholstery in Martinsburg.
Figlia, Zullo and a passenger in the van, Felix Roldan, 34, of the Bronx, were taken to New York Hospital for treatment and released.
The spokesman said the collision forced the closing of all lanes on the lower-level of the bridge for 2-1/2 hours.
Morning rush hour traffic was not affected by the incident, authorities said.
