MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Michael "Mike" D. Elins, 58, of Martinsburg, passed away Monday, March 10, 2008, at the Shenandoah Health Village Center of Charles Town, W.Va. He had been in declining health following heart bypass surgery last July.
He was born Dec. 30, 1949, in Martinsburg, the first son of the late Robert M. Elins and Nadia C. Elins.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his younger sister, Anna F. Elins.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene Flick Elins; two stepchildren; their five grandchildren; and his brother, Daniel J. Elins of Springfield, Va.
Mike graduated high school from Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, Va., in 1967, and college from Franklin & Marshall University, Lancaster, Pa., in 1971. Following college, he went into the family furniture business, The Berkeley Upholstering Company, serving as sales representative, vice president and president until its closure in 1996. From 1996 to 2004, Mike was employed at the Electromet, Hagerstown, Md., as their materials procurer.
Mike's primary avocation was flying, earning his private pilot's license while in college. He has served in the West Virginia State Civil Air Patrol.
Mike was a member of several civic organizations, including Masons Equality Lodge 44 A.F. and A.M., Rotary, Martinsburg Planning Commission, and served on several community advisory boards, Shenandoah Area Council of the Boy Scouts. He was a member of the flying organization Quiet Birdsmen and International 180-185 Club.
He was a member of the Beth Jacob Synagogue and had served as its president and treasurer.
Family and friends may call at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2008.
Private funeral services will be held with Rabbi Jonathan Brown officiating. Interment will be at the Congregation Beth Jacob Cemetery, Martinsburg.
