Voyage James was born around 1818 in Mississippi in the Chickasaw Nation to Lea & Gabriel James. He had been held as a slave by Molsey Colbert. He had two siblings: Caesar James and Katie James.

The family traveled on the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma Indian Territory and settled in the area that later became Garvin County.

Voyage joined in marriage with Choctaw Freedwoman Edie Colbert (daughter of Byington & Delsie), and to this union were born 6 children: Ephraim, Malinda, Calvin, Easter, Annie, and Hepsy (aka Epsie) James.

Voyage departed this life sometime before the Dawes Act enrollment of freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes began in 1898. His grandchildren were: William, Mary, Israel, Caesar, Isabella, Henrietta, Almond, Ephraim Jr., George, Emma, Voyage, and Grant James (Ephraim's children with Dinah Abram); Frank, Voyage, Palesa, Gat, Florence "Belle", Carrie, Lewins, and William Russell, Jr. (Malinda's children with William Russell, Sr.); Margaret "Maggie", Thomas, and Flora James (Calvin's children with Amanda Josey); Rennie Oliver (Annie's child with John Oliver); Willie Miles, Joseph and Gertrude Farris (Hepsy's children with Robinson Miles & Robert Farris, respectively).

Voyage James's many descendants treasure his legacy and will forever cherish his memory.
